Virtual Ports of Call Auction a Success!

Community support for hospice care ensures quality of life at the end-of-life

On Saturday, September 18, 2021, the Hospice of the Northwest Foundation held its 21st Annual Ports of Call Auction and Gala. The virtual event brought together supporters from across the United States! From Girdwood, Alaska to Richmond, Virginia, people tuned in to help support the programs and services that Hospice of the Northwest provides in Skagit, San Juan, Snohomish, and Island counties.

With 200 registered guests and 40 sponsors, the event raised more than $225,000.

This year the HNW Foundation highlighted the unique needs that Veterans can have at the end of life. A generation of World War II and Korean War Veterans are facing end-of-life care decisions now. They are quickly being followed by younger Vietnam and Gulf War-era veterans, many of whom are confronting serious illness at an even earlier age. With the help of donors, Hospice of the Northwest provides specialized programs that are designed to treat the needs of Veterans holistically – body, mind, and spirit.

Gifts made to the HNW Foundation provide training, equipment, and experiences designed to serve Veterans through the challenges they may be facing from illness, isolation, or trauma. At a time when every moment counts, donors ensure that America’s Veterans, regardless of their insurance coverage or ability to pay, are served with compassion and dignity every moment of life.

The Hospice of the Northwest Foundation has committed to providing more than $576,000 in program funds to Hospice of the Northwest during 2021. These program funds help bridge the gap between what the agency is reimbursed through Medicare and other insurance programs, and what it costs to provide quality and compassionate hospice care. Program funds also help defray agency costs for clinical education, technology upgrades, integrative therapy, bereavement care, and uncompensated patient care.

Wendy Coates, Executive Director of the Hospice of the Northwest Foundation, thanked viewers and donors for their part in ensuring that Hospice programs and services continue to meet the needs and expectations of the community. She explained that “the expert and dignified care that Hospice of the Northwest provides is made possible through the generous support of our donors, and we are deeply grateful for your support of our mission.” Coates also thanked the Hospice of the Northwest staff “for the dignified care they provide to our community, families, friends, and neighbors every day.” And she explained that “their teamwork and dedication are unsurpassed.”
