Palliative Pearl:

One minute functional assessment in advanced COPD

September 2019 –

Showering often becomes the most difficult physical exertion in these patients.

Asking one of the following questions can quickly help assess whether a patient may be hospice eligible, may need their blood pressure medications reduced to reduce risk of falls or need more palliation for breathlessness.

  • “Some patients avoid showering because it’s so exhausting.  Is this a problem for you?”
  • “How long do you have to rest after taking a shower?”
  • “Do you feel lightheaded or weak in the shower?”
