Every life story is marked by service, sacrifice, and personal meaning. For Military Veterans, this legacy is especially poignant at the end of life. Hospice of the Northwest provides specialized care for Veteran patients, addressing both their medical needs and their legacy of military service.
The Power of Veteran-Centered Hospice Care
David Story’s hospice journey illustrates how compassionate, Veteran-centered hospice care can provide both hope and healing. David served in the U.S. Army from 1968 to 1972, including 14 months in Vietnam under active fire. As a Specialist 4th Class with the 53rd Signal Company near Long Binh, he worked at various communications posts. He also helped fellow soldiers struggling with substance use, showing compassion and leadership under intense circumstances.
Veteran Pinning Ceremony
One of the most touching moments of David’s hospice experience was a Veteran Pinning Ceremony. These ceremonies are designed to recognize and thank Veterans for their service and are offered to every Veteran in hospice care.
During this ceremony, Hospice of the Northwest volunteer and fellow Veteran Richard Fink presented David with a commemorative pin and a U.S. Army Coin Award honoring his bravery and sacrifice.
“Your service immeasurably contributed to our lasting freedoms,” Richard said. “You endured hardships and were willing to place yourself in harm’s way to maintain freedom.”
Those words provided a long-overdue moment of recognition. Because the Vietnam War was controversial, many Veterans returned home without the honor and welcome they deserved. Hospice of the Northwest is committed to changing that narrative. We proudly participate in the We Honor Veterans initiative and collaborate with local VA offices so eligible patients can access their earned benefits. Our Veteran-to-Veteran volunteer program and trauma-informed care practices also foster camaraderie, trust, and healing for those who may carry invisible wounds.
“This gave me the closure that I never got from Vietnam.” – David Story
Thanks to Hospice of the Northwest Foundation donors and community supporters, each Veteran receives specialized care at no cost to them or their families. Because of you, every facet of David’s care has been rooted in understanding, honor, and empathy. With your continued support, we will always honor the lives, legacies, and needs of Veterans in our care.
