Volunteer Screening and Training

We appreciate your interest in becoming a volunteer with Hospice of the Northwest!

Hospice of the Northwest Volunteer Screening and Training Program

Because of the sensitive nature of our organization’s work, each prospective volunteer is required to undergo a screening process, which includes an interview with the hospice volunteer supervisor and background and reference checks.

Once the screening process is satisfactory, you will complete an extensive training program:

  • Learning hospice philosophy and care
  • Exploring your personal feelings about death
  • Understanding your role on the care team
  • Developing good listening skills
  • Understanding the unique issues faced by people dealing with terminal illness
  • Providing support and reassurance to patients and families
  • Assisting in tasks to bring patients comfort

As a Hospice Volunteer

After completing training, you’ll be expected to be available for two to four hours per week, to offer companionship and emotional support to patients and families and relief to caregivers.

Ongoing Support Groups and Volunteer Education

Hospice of the Northwest supports volunteers through bi-monthly support groups, newsletters, and educational programs.

To Become a Volunteer:

Call the Volunteer Supervisor at (360) 814-5550 or email info@hospicenw.org.
Or complete a Volunteer Application Packet and we’ll contact you.
